Joint Replacement Stay and Visa Planning in China
Plan the appointment, hospital stay, recovery accommodation and entry documents for a joint-replacement visit to China.
By Medvoyal Research. Independent, non-clinical planning research based on the official hospital, government and published sources cited. Listing a hospital is not a recommendation or partnership.
Read our research methodology.Reviewed by Wang Haibin (王海滨), Associate Chief Physician, Department of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery, Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, Associate Professor, PhD.
Review scope: Medical accuracy of non-clinical stay and visa planning and orthopedic logistics; does not cover joint replacement surgical specifics. Last reviewed 2026-10-30.
How Long You Need to Stay
The joint-replacement overview gives this illustrative planning sequence, not a discharge or flight-clearance schedule. Ask the treating surgeon for your own timeline before paying for travel.
| Phase | Working estimate from the overview | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Assessment before surgery | 2–3 days | Appointment dates, required imaging and test results. |
| Surgery and inpatient stay | 3–5 days for joint replacement | Hospital admission and discharge criteria. |
| Local recovery and first follow-up | 7–10 days | Follow-up appointment, rehabilitation access and travel clearance. |
| Total planning window | 2–3 weeks | Add a buffer if the hospital expects further review or a later follow-up. |
These durations were published in the overview reviewed 2026-10-29. They are not a promise that your case will follow that schedule.
Which Entry Route Fits
China's unilateral visa-free scheme covers eligible ordinary-passport holders for stays of up to 30 days, but its listed entry purposes do not expressly include medical treatment. Confirm eligibility and the permitted purpose with the Chinese consulate and be prepared to explain your trip honestly at the border. For planned inpatient treatment or a stay that may exceed the waiver, ask the hospital about an acceptance letter for an S2 application before departure. A US passport is not on the unilateral waiver list. See the S2 hospital-letter guide and the National Immigration Administration's country list, compiled 2026-02-17.
Visa-Free Countries
The official list of 50 countries includes European, Asian, Oceanian and American nationalities; it is a nationality and passport rule, not a hospital-access guarantee. Use the official list rather than an older copied list, and check the policy end date and permitted purpose before booking. The S2 guide explains the difference between short visits and a treatment-acceptance letter.
Planning Your Trip
Choose accommodation near the hospital campus that will actually treat you, with accessible entry, a lift and a suitable bathroom. Confirm who can help you travel between the hospital, lodging and physiotherapy appointments. Ask whether a companion can attend check-in and whether the hospital can provide interpretation. Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital has a published profile, but you must verify the department, campus and services directly.
Keep flight and lodging changes possible until the hospital confirms the schedule and the entry route is settled. Arrange a local clinician or physiotherapist for after you return; the follow-up guide has a handoff checklist.
What If You Need to Extend
Contact the hospital and local exit-entry administration promptly if your schedule changes. A stay permit or visa extension may be available with supporting documents, but approval is discretionary and should not be part of your base plan. The National Immigration Administration's guidance describes applications by visa-exempt visitors who need longer stays. Ask your consulate about an S2 before departure if a longer stay is foreseeable. For urgent symptoms, seek local clinical or emergency help rather than waiting for immigration paperwork or Medvoyal.
In a medical emergency in China, call 120
120 is the emergency ambulance number in mainland China. You can also go straight to the emergency department (急诊) of the nearest hospital. Don't wait for a reply from Medvoyal or a companion. We are not an emergency service.
For planning purposes only. Not medical or immigration advice. Your treating hospital decides the care schedule and your consulate or border authority decides entry. Verify current rules before booking. Medvoyal does not diagnose, treat or guarantee outcomes.
