What to Prepare for a Cancer Second Opinion in China
Use a practical records, travel and follow-up checklist before requesting a cancer second opinion from a hospital in China.

Review scope: Medical accuracy of non-clinical preparation and records-planning information for cancer diagnosis review in China; does not review a reader's individual records. Last reviewed 2026-10-30.
Before You Contact the Hospital
Decide what answer you need: confirmation of an existing diagnosis, review of a proposed plan, or a question about additional testing. The cancer second-opinion overview shows how the hospital response fits into your decision. At first contact, share only a short description of the care area, your current stage and the question you want the hospital to answer.
Do not send medical records, scans or pathology through the Medvoyal website or by email. Ask the receiving hospital what it needs and how it accepts files. Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center is one published profile you can use to check international access, but a profile is not case acceptance.
Medical Records Checklist
Prepare a list of what you already have and what is missing. The receiving clinician chooses the final set. Common items to ask about are:
- Diagnosis and pathology reports, plus the process for requesting original slides or blocks if the hospital wants a pathology re-review.
- Imaging reports and original image files, ideally in the format the receiving hospital requests, rather than phone photographs alone.
- Prior treatment summaries, operation and discharge records where relevant.
- Current medication list and reports for tests the hospital has specifically requested.
- A short dated timeline of prior appointments and treatment, written by you for administrative orientation; do not ask Medvoyal to interpret it.
- The exact clinical question you want the hospital's specialist to answer in writing.
The China medical-records checklist explains how to request official copies and usable imaging. Check whether reports need translation, and who will arrange it.
How Records Reach the Hospital
After the hospital agrees to review the case, a named coordinator can hand records to that hospital under your written consent and the agreed secure handoff route; Medvoyal passes them unchanged and deletes its copy under the published policy. Read the full second-opinion records handoff guide before sending anything.
Documents for Your Trip
If the hospital asks you to attend in person, carry your passport, appointment confirmation, travel insurance or international-health-insurance details, a list of current medicines, and any translated copies the hospital or consulate requests. Keep the originals and a secure backup under your control. Ask the hospital whether it needs physical pathology material, how it should be packaged and returned, and whether you can instead arrange direct provider-to-provider transfer.
Check your entry route with the S2 hospital-letter guide. The stay and visa page helps separate a short review visit from a later treatment plan.
What to Bring Home
Ask the hospital how to receive the signed written opinion, pathology-review result if one was performed, imaging report and files for any new scan, and an itemized bill with official receipt. If further care is planned at home, ask which reports remain pending and how they will reach your treating clinician.
Use the departure records checklist and the follow-up care guide to plan the handoff. Your own treating clinician should interpret the opinion and decide what it means for your care.
In a medical emergency in China, call 120
120 is the emergency ambulance number in mainland China. You can also go straight to the emergency department (急诊) of the nearest hospital. Don't wait for a reply from Medvoyal or a companion. We are not an emergency service.
For planning purposes only. Not medical advice. Medvoyal does not diagnose, interpret records, treat, or guarantee clinical outcomes. The receiving hospital decides which records and tests it needs. Listing a hospital is not a recommendation or endorsement.
