Bariatric (Weight-Loss) Surgery in China
Plan a bariatric surgery inquiry in China, including eligibility questions, public cost estimates, travel and long-term follow-up.

What this page covers
Bariatric surgery — sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and related procedures — is one of the most standardized surgical fields globally. The procedures, follow-up protocols and eligibility criteria are governed by international guidelines (IFSO, ASMBS). China's metabolic surgery volume has grown rapidly, with several centers now performing hundreds of procedures per year.
This page covers what you need to plan: eligibility, which hospitals offer it with international access, costs, how long you stay, and the critical question of long-term follow-up after you go home.
Why consider China
- Cost. Bariatric surgery in the US typically costs $15,000–25,000 (with insurance) or $20,000–35,000 (self-pay). In China, a standard laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy at a public hospital costs roughly ¥45,000–65,000 ($6,300–9,200) self-pay; VIP or single-port options run ¥80,000–100,000. These are estimates from public sources, not hospital quotes for international patients — see the cost table below.
- No waiting list. Countries with public healthcare (UK, Canada, Gulf states) often have long waits for publicly funded bariatric surgery. Private payment in China means you book based on surgeon availability.
- Visa convenience. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain (visa-free 30 days), the UAE, Qatar (mutual visa exemption), Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay (visa-free 30 days), the UK, Canada, Australia (visa-free 30 days) can enter China without a visa for a trip of this length. See our visa guide.
- Standardized procedure. Sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass follow international protocols. The technique does not vary as much between countries as, say, cancer treatment plans.
Who is a candidate
International guidelines (IFSO/ASMBS) generally recommend bariatric surgery for:
- BMI ≥ 40, or
- BMI ≥ 35 with obesity-related comorbidities (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea), or
- BMI ≥ 30 with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes (metabolic surgery indication)
The Chinese hospital's surgical team makes the final eligibility decision based on your records, not Medvoyal. Asian BMI thresholds may differ from Western ones — ask the hospital which criteria they apply to international patients.
We do not assess eligibility. If you want to know whether a Chinese hospital would consider you, send your records through the process described below.
Hospitals
Several major public hospitals have active bariatric/metabolic surgery programs. The ones most commonly cited in publicly available sources include:
| Hospital | City | Notes | In our directory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University | Beijing | One of Beijing's 18 international medical pilot institutions | Yes |
| China-Japan Friendship Hospital | Beijing | International medical pilot; bariatric program cited in public reporting | Yes |
| Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine | Shanghai | Strong endocrinology; metabolic surgery program | Yes |
| Jinan University First Affiliated Hospital (暨南大学附属第一医院) | Guangzhou | Cited as a bariatric center in public reporting | Not yet profiled |
We have not independently confirmed that each of these hospitals accepts foreign patients for bariatric surgery with English-language support. If you have a hospital in mind, we can help you contact its international department to check.
What it costs
| Component | US (estimate) | China public hospital (estimate) | China VIP / single-port | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Roux-en-Y gastric bypass | $20,000–35,000 | ¥60,000–80,000 ($8,500–11,300) | Higher | Estimate |
| Pre-operative workup (metabolic panel, sleep study) | Included or $1,000–3,000 | ~¥5,000 ($700) | Similar | Estimate |

China prices explained. The standard multi-port laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy at a public tertiary-A hospital's bariatric center (e.g. Beijing Friendship Hospital, China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Ruijin Hospital) costs roughly ¥45,000–65,000 self-pay, including pre-operative metabolic and sleep assessments (¥5,000), disposable laparoscopic stapler cartridges (¥20,000–30,000, the largest single cost component), anesthesia, and 4–5 days in a standard ward. Single-port (transumbilical) surgery for minimal scarring costs ¥80,000–100,000 due to specialized instruments.
International-department or VIP pricing is not separately published for bariatric surgery at these hospitals. Foreign patients paying out of pocket at the standard department pay the same rates as domestic self-pay patients, but a VIP or international ward adds ¥400–1,000/day for the room. Ask the hospital which department will perform the surgery and what the total estimate is.

How long you need to stay
| Phase | Duration |
|---|---|
| Pre-operative assessment and diet | 2–3 days (some programs require a longer pre-op diet; confirm with the hospital) |
| Surgery + hospital stay | 2–4 days |
| Post-operative monitoring and first follow-up | 3–5 days |
| Total | 10–14 days |
30-day visa-free entry covers this comfortably. You do not need an S2 visa for a standard bariatric trip.
Follow-up: the most important part
Bariatric surgery is not a one-time event. Long-term success depends on:
- Nutritional supplementation — lifelong vitamins and minerals (B12, iron, calcium, vitamin D at minimum). Your home doctor or a dietitian must monitor levels.
- Dietary progression — liquid → soft → solid foods over 4–6 weeks post-surgery. The hospital gives you a protocol; follow it.
- Follow-up schedule — typically at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and then annually. Blood work and nutritional status at each visit.
- Behavioral support — eating habits, exercise, psychological support. This is harder to arrange across borders.
Before you leave China:
- Get the surgical report, dietary protocol, and supplement plan in English
- Ask the surgeon for a letter to your home doctor explaining the procedure, the anatomy change, and the recommended follow-up
- See our records checklist
The biggest risk of bariatric tourism is not the surgery itself — it is losing follow-up. Make sure you have a doctor at home who will monitor you before you book the surgery abroad.
